Last weekend I pulled the last of our carrots and all but the few remaining tomato plants that are still somehow producing. At the end of each pathetic growing season my frustration is overcome by my vision of a flourishing garden, and more important, to give my girls an appreciation for fresh food. As I was planting our lettuce, broccoli, and brussel sprouts, I began thinking about all the things I'm teaching the girls they should NOT to do in the garden. They know from experience what happens when we plant our seeds too deep, when we don't thin our seedlings enough, when we over-prune, when we over-water, when we under-water, what vegetables to not like being contained, and what happens to our plants when every pest known to man decides to take residence.
